Ghost estates of the Midlands inspire film

Shorelines Screen Scene is delighted to offer audiences a chance to catch the cinematic-triptych film Wallets Full of Blood, by Eamonn Crudden. The film comprises three short films, Houses on the Moon, Zombie Banker Blues, and Roscommon Death Trip, and deals with the recession in Ireland - its architects and causes - in a way never done before, and probably never again.

Shell to Sea protesters jailed

Three Shell to Sea protesters who were involved in a protest in September 2008, while taking part in a vehicle protest throughout the Erris area in support of Maura Harrington’s hunger strike, blocked in and surrounded an unmarked Garda car, were each sentenced to six months in jail after they refused to undertake community service.

Gardaí surrounded in unmarked car by ‘unruly out of control mob’

Seven protesters who were taking part in a peaceful solidarity protest in the Erris area, which was attended by local adults and children in support of Maura Harrington’s hunger strike, were before a special sitting of Belmullet District Court on Wednesday. During the protest a cortege of 86 vehicles travelled through the region, which was followed by an unmarked Garda car. The four uniformed gardaí were at one stage surrounded by a ‘mob’ of protesters as they locked themselves in the Garda car, the court heard.

Protester gave undertaking in court not to protest

A Shell to Sea campaigner gave a sworn undertaking at Ballina District Court this week that he would not partake in any protests in relation to Shell to Sea until after September 2010, when a suspended sentence which was imposed on the Glenamoy man last year would expire.

Geesala host night of top quality bouts

Geesala Boxing Club held their annual tournament in Erris House Hotel last Saturday night. As usual there was a full house and the audience was treated to a great night’s entertainment. Dylan Meenaghan provided the curtain raiser and also the first win of the night for the Geesala team. He was followed by fine performances from Peter Howard and Martin McDonnell. Martin’s brother Shane McDonnell also gave a good performance but did not get the nod from the judges. Liam Ginty, who hails from Inver, was desperately unlucky when he was the wrong side of a majority decision in a very close contest. It was the same story for Pearse Holmes. However James Coyle got the Geesala side back to winning ways and he was followed with another win by last year’s Irish champion, Shane McIntyre. Last time out Shane McAndrew thrilled the crowd in Glenamoy with a great knock out win but, despite a great battle, he failed to register a victory. Then newcomer Andrew Kelly gave a tremendous performance to snatch another victory for the home side. Just before the break the crowd were on their feet again and despite the lack of local interest they acknowledged the skill and determination of J Langan of Knockmore and D O'Reilly from Nielstown in Dublin.
