The Carramore race is a traditional 10k race ran over a fast flat rural one lap course. The Carramore 10k has been organised by Christy Heneghan and his local committee for the past 10 years or so. There is also a four mile walk over a separate course. Both events start at 6pm on Saturday May 21 and both are in support of Mayo Roscommon Hospice. This is the second race in the 2011 Mayo AC Road Race League. Gerry Ryan, John Byrne, and Robert Malseed are previous Carramore 10k winners and Catherine Conway, Mary Gleeson, and Regina Casey have won the women's race.
A large group of Mayo athletes were in action in Omagh in County Tyrone in the 21st Omagh Half Marathon recently. A record number of athletes took part with Clonliffe Harriers Sergiu Crobann completing the course to win the event in 1:07:44.
The Mayo County Athletics Board Awards evening was hosted recently by Mayo AC at Balla Resources centre. Six Mayo AC athletes were among many recognised for their achievements in 2009. They were Catherine Conway - senior women road racing, Kathy Connolly and Ann Murray (jointly) - master’s women road racing, TJ McHugh - master’s men road racing o35, Breege Blehein-McHale - international achievement, and Tom Hunt - master men road racing o50.
Kilnaboy AC in Co Clare have built a great tradition around their annual Michael 'Sonny' Murphy Memorial 10 mile road race.
