The truth about the process of dying will be the key topic to be discussed at an event at NUI Galway next week, addressed by bestselling author Dr Kathryn Mannix.

The Memorial Walk will begin at 12noon from Claddagh Hall and take its traditional route to Blackrock and back, a distance of 6.5km. The Memorial Walk is Galway Hospice’s biggest annual fundraising event. Since it began in 2006, it has raised over €2million to help maintain essential Hospice services. Those who take part in the Memorial Walk do so in memory of a family member, friend or work colleague who has passed away, with many wearing the name of their loved one on special personalised t-shirts provided by the Hospice.

Demand for the services provided by the Galway Hospice are expected to double in the next 10 years, which highlights the urgent need to find a new site for this much needed facility, according to its chief executive Mary Nash.

Galway Hospice volunteer Pat O’Connell is set to cycle the length of the UK to raise funds for the hospice.

There was excitement and emotion as the volunteers from the 12 Hospice shops visited the Hospice for the first time, ahead of the open week where over 700 people, comprising of fundraisers, volunteers, supporters, former board members, have registered to see this fantastic facility.

The board of Galway Hospice is to take time to review the decision of An Bord Pleanala to overturn its planning permission for the development of a new 36-bed hospice at Merlin Park, and may if necessary look at an alternative site for the facility.

A few years back, I and other Councillors were approached by the board and management of Galway Hospice seeking support to build a new modern state of the art facility on the grounds of Merlin Park. They explained that prior to selecting this site they had examined many other locations throughout Galway.
