Westport United kept up their 100 per cent record in the Elverys Sports Super League on Sunday, but they were made to work hard to maintain their winning run by Charlestown Athletic. Two late second half goals was what separated the teams at the full time whistle with David Cameron and David Hoban hit the target late on.

Westport just keep on winning

Outside the Box was off last week. But some things don’t change, and Westport United kept on winning, making it ten out of ten so far in the Elverys Sports Super League. I don’t know if any bookmakers are giving odds on the men from the Sportspark going through the whole season with a 100 per cent record, never mind unbeaten, but if they are they are surely shrinking with each week that goes by. This weekend they will make the trip to Charlestown Athletic to take on a side who have more than held their own with the rest of the league this season, and picked up their fourth win last time out with a 1-0 win over Fahy Rovers in Moneen. But when these sides met in round three of the league back at the tail end of April, Westport United ran out 7-2 winners with a side that was shorn of many of their biggest names.

All-night humdinger of a battle in Ballina proves every vote really does count

It was widely expected that the eight seats in the Ballina area would be some of the most hotly contested in the county and that was certainly the case in the count centre in the TF Royal Theatre Hotel, Castlebar, over the weekend.

Foxford postman to deliver to refugee camp

A postman based in Foxford whose normal run takes him to the villages of Newtown, Cloghans, and Knockmore will be undertaking a much longer delivery in the near future when he heads to Bulgaria in September this year to deliver aid to a Syrian children’s refugee camp. Brendan Medlar has volunteered to be a driver on the Communications Workers Union convoy to the camp, a 4,000 mile round trip. Mr Medlar who will be driving an An Post truck will meet with the projects partners from Eircom and will travel to the UK, where they will join a further 10 to 12 trucks for the trek across Europe to the camp.

Almost €1 million allocated for housing units for the elderly in Foxford

Funding of €975,000 was announced this week for the provision of eight housing units for the benefit of the elderly in Foxford. The announcement was made by the Minister of State for Housing and Planning, Jan O’Sullivan. The funding for the project has come from the Capital Assistance Scheme and has been allocated to the St Vincent de Paul, which is an approved housing body. The proposed development will be constructed at Irishtown on the Swinford road in Foxford.

Cup action dominates this weekend

A few hours after this week’s edition of the Mayo Advertiser went to print last night, a trio of catch-up games in the Super League will have taken place. Westport United will have the chance to stretch their lead at the top out to five points when they take on Ballyheane, Castlebar Celtic will host Moy Villa, while the two teams at the bottom of the table meet with Iorras Aontaithe hosting Fahy Rovers.
