THE CONTROVERSIAL Israeli film Foxtrot, three films from France, a Danish thriller, a Turkish story about family and home, and a Hungarian film dealing with anti-Semitism, will be screened in the Pálás Cinema during the Galway Film Society's Spring 2019 season.

Week II

We know very little about manmade piers and quays along the western seaboard before the beginning of the 19th century, when a lavish programme of safe harbours were built not only to encourage fishing, but as relief programmes in times of distress. It was also an attempt to replace the activities of piracy and smuggling with an industry based on the believed bounty from the sea.

Michael Madden came to Taylor’s Hill from the Ballinasloe area c1898. His family had been in the nursery business there since the 1830s, and in Laurencetown before that again. He leased the land in Taylor’s Hill from Colonel Courtney. In 1902, his brother James and his wife Elizabeth came to live there also, and a few years later, on Michael’s death, they took over the running of the nurseries.

The Linenhall Arts Centre’s full autumn/winter 2017 programme is now online, heralding an exciting and packed programme of music, theatre, comedy, film, literary events and more, promising something for everyone over the coming months. And of course there are exhibitions and workshops too, plus annual favourite RoolaBoola Children’s Arts Festival to keep the young ones entertained and engaged.

Throughout the centuries the islands of Lough Mask have stood silently and helplessly by as they played host to many extraordinary events. This week I am able to touch on just some of those events chronologically.

THIS SATURDAY marks the 30th anniversary of the death of the legendary Galway fiddle player and traditional Irish musician Mickey Finn. His passing will be marked in a weekend of memorial sessions at The Crane Bar, from Friday April 21 to Sunday 23, featuring Mickey’s widow, Lena Finn, as well as Sean Ryan, Jackie Small, and Mickey’s brother Johnny Finn.
