After a tense wait of almost three weeks there was great news for Mayo AC following publication of the results from the National 10k Championships held on April 15 in the Phoenix Park. They came away with rich sprinkling of five gold, three silver, and two bronze with medals for four teams and in six individual categories.

A large number of members from Mayo AC are getting ready to take on the challenge of the 2011 Dublin Marathon on Monday morning. Almost half of those who are taking part have come into running through the Mayo Fit4Life scheme in Claremorris, Ballinrobe and Castlebar. The women’s senior team consists of Ann McDonnell, Maggie Heneghan, Kathy Connolly, Patricia Gallagher, Paula Prendergast and Yvonne Byrne. The women’s o-40 team is made up of Gwen Daly, Anne Fahy Ronayne, Pauline Joyce, Mary Walsh, Chris Gallagher and Mary Murphy. The senior men’s team is Damien Glacken, Brendan Harrison, Gerry Corley and John Byrne, while the o-50 side consists of Brian Cusack, John Timothy, Jimmy Feeney, Billy Gallagher, Owen Mongan, Chris O’Connell and Tom Hunt.
The sixth race in Mayo AC's C&C Cellular 2011 Road League is at Claremorris on Saturday August 27 at 12 noon. Kilmovee is the place to be this next Saturday, April 23 for the first race in 2011 Mayo AC C and C Cellular Road League. This is the 13th year of the successful series, which covers various distances and venues around the county. The League will have a more compact structure this year, comprising eight races, and finishes with the Ballina 10k in September. Martin Conroy (Sligo AC) was the winner over this reputedly fast course last year in 32.41, closely followed by John Byrne. The women's winner was Angela O’Connor (Mayo AC) in 41,27. Angela won the over 45 category in the recent National 10k championships. The race starts at 1pm sharp. Registration is at GAA grounds in Kilmovee. Entry fee is €20 on-line at www.runireland.com or €25 on the day. Showers and refreshments available in Kilmovee community centre.
There will be a very strong Mayo AC representation at the national 10k championships this weekend. The Mayo AC senior men’s team will be made up of TJ McHugh .Anthony Devanney, Timmy Glavey, Brendan Hession, Dave Huane, Andrew Lynskey, and Kevin Mellett. The senior ladies’ team is Catherine Conway, Mary Gleeson, Paula Prendergast, Sarah Syron, and Colette Tuohy. Christy O’Malley will be competing in the men’s over 40, with Billy Gallagher, Tom Hunt, Owen Mongan, Ronnie Naylor, Michael McGrath and John Timothy in the over 50s section. The women’s over 40s team will consist of Chris Gallagher, Anne Murray and Angela O'Connor. Mary Naylor and Una McGrath will be competing for Mayo AC in the over 50s women’s event.
Four Mayo AC members were among the winners at the 2010 C and C Cellular/ Mayo AAI County Board Awards function held in the Park Hotel Kiltimagh on Sunday last.
It began with the Carramore 10k in May and will reach its exciting conclusion with the Westport 5k on Sunday December 12 it is the Mayo AC, C&C Cellular league which once again proved an outstanding success this year. This is the 12th year that this popular race series has been held and the fifth time to be supported by the C&C Cellular Group. Over the years many runners have been discovered through the league races with many going on to achieve national success since. While some of the league prizewinners are already known there is still a lot of running to be done in Westport before the prizes are paid out at the post race presentation in Hotel Westport.
