Last Sunday at the Woodie’s DIY Masters Indoor Championships, Mayo AC came home with number of medals split between two athletes. In the female over 45 section, Ann Murray won a gold medal in the 3,000 metres and a bronze in the 400 metres. In the men’s over 55 section, Patrick Moran won the gold in the high jump event and took a bronze in the long jump.

Kilmovee is the place to be this next Saturday, April 23 for the first race in 2011 Mayo AC C and C Cellular Road League. This is the 13th year of the successful series, which covers various distances and venues around the county. The League will have a more compact structure this year, comprising eight races, and finishes with the Ballina 10k in September. Martin Conroy (Sligo AC) was the winner over this reputedly fast course last year in 32.41, closely followed by John Byrne. The women's winner was Angela O’Connor (Mayo AC) in 41,27. Angela won the over 45 category in the recent National 10k championships. The race starts at 1pm sharp. Registration is at GAA grounds in Kilmovee. Entry fee is €20 on-line at www.runireland.com or €25 on the day. Showers and refreshments available in Kilmovee community centre.

People often shake their heads when they hear you are about to run a marathon. Mayo AC's John Byrne is well used to dedicated preparation. He has been their most successful athlete over many years now at a range of distances from 5k upwards. He has completed 24 marathons and a 50k. Over the past year John has moved on to new goals. Given the number of training miles he runs it seemed a natural step-up that he would progress 'beyond the marathon', or that zone defined as ultra distance running. The 100k is the equivalent of running two marathons plus ten miles - 62.5 miles in total. Start out in Ballaghaderreen, run along the N5 to Bohola, take a diversion down to John's homeplace in Straide, then back onto N5 at Ballyvary, through Castlebar and Westport, then on to the R335 until you hit Louisburgh - you will still have 3k to run to complete 100k!

While many of his Mayo AC club mates prepare for the Westport 5k, John Walkin will be heading to the Odyssey Arena in Belfast. The AAI National Senior Indoor Track and Field Championships take place over Saturday and Sunday this weekend. Walkin, who specialises in sprinting, will be rubbing shoulders with many big names when he takes part in the 60 metres event. Over the years he has represented the club with distinction and led the Mayo AC relay team to national silver a number of years ago.

Ballina scoops double gold at indoor master championships

An extraordinary night of music was enjoyed by a packed Town Hall Theatre on Saturday evening. Music for Galway, that simple title that conveys so much, celebrate 30 years of existence during which it placed Galway high on the map of venues for many of Europe’s leading musicians, performers and choirs. It has initiated not only a loyal following for its exemplary Autumn and Winter programmes throughout the years, but enabled the talented Con Tempo Quartet to reside here as its ensemble in residence. This popular quartet has now merged into a music residency which delivers performances, education and community programmes to schools, and groups throughout the city and county. This Sunday, August 22, Westport will host a 5k fun run and walk around the historic tourist town. The event is open to absolutely everyone of all abilities and will take place through the grounds of Westport House. The event starts at 4.30pm sharp at the North Mall, with registration taking place from 3.30pm in the same location. The course has been accurately measured, and is the ideal distance for families, walkers, Fit4Life members, and club runners. The ninth DecareDental/Claremorris five mile run and walk which took place recently was again a great success attracting competitors from all over the west of Ireland. The event, which was in aid of Mayo Cancer Support, was held in dry but windy conditions ensuring that personal best times for the five mile distance were hard to achieve. Pre-race favourite John Byrne finished strongly to take the men’s title in a time of 26.50, just six seconds ahead of team mate Robert Malseed, while TJ McHugh continued his recent good form coming home in third in 27.26. Roger Barrett finishing fourth in 27.34 was first of a number of Ballina AC runners who performed well on the evening.
