Week III

This week’s title borrows from John Kells Ingram’s famous 1843 political ballad, "The Memory of the Dead". In his poem, Ingram posits that later generations turned their fattened backs on the memory of the rebels of 1798, "Who Fears to Speak of '98?" Ingram was not a republican, but he penned his piece for the nationalist paper The Nation because he sympathised with what the United Irishmen had attempted to do and he had always pledged to defend brave men who opposed tyranny.

Week II

THE WORLD premiere of Frank McCourt’s memoir Angela's Ashes, takes place in the Lime Tree Theatre, Limerick from July 6 to 15, before transferring to the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre, Dublin, from July 18 to 30, and the Grand Opera House, Belfast, from August 1 to 5.

During her first visit to Ireland while walking the road from Oranmore to Loughrea, Aesnath Nicholson, a lone witness to the growing desperation of the poor as successive years of the Great Famine took its frightening toll, stopped to rest her blistered feet. She leant against a wall and thought about the advice her friends had given her in America. They told her the trip was reckless and she would damage her health. Yet even at that moment she asked herself: Would she rather be back in her parlour in New York?

ICONIC AMERICAN music, such as Bernstein's scores for West Side Story, will be performed by the Irish Chamber Orchestra on their America Tour, which comes to Galway next month.
