First Independent Mayo, the coalition of community groups that is planning to run an Independent candidate in Mayo in the next General Election, has unveiled its short list of seven potential candidates.

Four Buccaneers players in Ireland squads

Four Buccaneers players have been named in Ireland squads for the forthcoming RBS Six Nations championships. Mayo GAA could be on the lookout for a new county secretary this morning. At an executive meeting last night it was expected that current county secretary, Kevin O’Toole, would have offered his resignation from the role to the executive. The Tourmakeady clubman who took over the position at the 2011 convention from Séan Feeney had previously served in a number of roles including PRO for the county board. O’Toole had been one of the driving factors behind the Cáirde Mhaigheo season ticket and supporters club which has been a big success since its inception last year.

“I used to run shows and gigs in the university, UCG as it was, and I remember Mike from that time as he was big man, but I first met him properly in the 1980s, when the Galway Arts Festival was starting to get a bit of recognition. Back then I had a secretary and I was running around on a bike. Then we applied to the Arts Council to give us a grant so that we could appoint an administrator.
