The staff at Bloomfield House Hotel raised much needed money for victims of Typhoon Haiyan, which devastated areas of Southeast Asia, particularly the Philippines.

“This is a cause close to our hearts here at Bloomfield,” explains Liz Connaughton, director of Bloomfield House Hotel. “Two members of our team, Jilly and Celso Bercero are both originally from the Philippines.”

Jilly and Celso arrived in Mullingar in December 2003 to begin their new lives here. They secured full-time work at Bloomfield House and became Irish citizens in 2011.

Typhoon Haiyan caused catastrophic destruction in the Philippines particularly in Jilly and Celso’s home province Leyte. According to UN officials, about 11 million people have been affected and many have been left homeless.

The staff at Bloomfield House held a collection for Jilly and Celos’ friends who lost everything in the hurricane. The money raised will go directly to their friends to help them during this difficult time.

“The damage from Typhoon Haiyan is so sad. It is very hard to express how bad it is. It is very upsetting hearing of all the people who have died and all the damaged caused,” said Jilly. “We are very grateful for the kind donations from Bloomfield and the Irish people who have showed us how caring and supportive they are,” she added.
