Black ice cause five collisions in two hours

The return of icy conditions to the Mullingar area this week saw a record five road collisions occur within a two hour period on Wednesday morning.

Between 6am and 8am on Wednesday this week, five cars were involved in single vehicle collisions as the unexpected arrival of black ice left local roads in treacherous condition.

Two collisions occurred on the N4 Mullingar bypass at Marlinstown and Cullionbeg, while vehicles also skidded at Lynn Road, Dalystown on the Kilbeggan road, and Crookedwood.

No one was injured in the accidents, and there were minimal interruptions to traffic with no roads closed off. Gardai in Mullingar said all five collisions were as a result of icy conditions.

“During the previous cold period there was nothing of this nature. People were caught unawares with the ice, but luckily there were no injuries. We are appealing to all motorists to be careful on the roads,” said Sergeant Roger Nicholson of Mullingar Garda Station.
