Concern over antisocial behaviour at Camp Field

Westmeath County Council is to correspond with both Columb Barracks and the Department of Defence after the issue of “constant littering and loitering” on the Camp Field, Mullingar was raised last week.

Several councillors expressed their concern over increasing levels of antisocial behaviour and littering on the Army property, off Patrick Street.

Cllr Aidan Davitt said it is being treated as “no man’s land”.

“It is very unhygienic; even from the point of view of human safety we should write to the department and ask them their future plans for the land,” he suggested.

However Cllr Mick Dollard suggested also writing to the local barracks, as the Camp Field is used for Army training exercises locally.

Cllr Detty Cornally added that a lot of antisocial behaviour is taking place on the site.

“Residents are affected, people are drinking there and cans being thrown over walls, there is litter coming into estates,” she said.
