Man gets €250 fine for threatening behaviour towards gardai

A man who told gardaí they were “chickenshits” who were “afraid to go into halting sites to arrest knackers” has been fined €250 for threatening behaviour.

Barry Owens of Gaulmoylestown, Knockdrin, Mullingar made the comments when he was directed to leave Oliver Plunkett Street in the early hours of November 29, 2009.

He became abusive to gardaí and repeatedly called them “chickenshits”, saying “all gardaí are chickenshits”.

The music student, who has two previous convictions, felt he had been wronged by another person, Mr Robert Marren told the court, and was intoxicated at the time.

“He was angry because his brother had been assaulted three weeks earlier by certain parties and he felt the matter wasn’t resolved,” said Mr Marren.
