Paul Durcan at the Linenhall

One of Ireland’s foremost and most prolific poets, Paul Durcan, returns to the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar for one of his legendary readings on Thursday December 3 at 8pm.
Surreal, idiosyncratic, iconoclastic, and full of quirky roguishness, Durcan has carved out a distinctive status that straddles critical acclaim and popularity, a rare achievement in the world of poetry. For this event which takes place on International Day of Persons with Disabilities, Durcan has worked with Irish Sign Language interpreter Mairéad Hegarty to develop Irish Sign Language interpretations of selected poems from his most recent collection The Days of Surprise.

Award winning Castlebar Musical and Dramatic Society is currently in full rehearsal swing for its production of Fiddler on The Roof, which will be staged in the Royal Theatre, Castlebar, over three nights from Thursday December 3 to Saturday December 5. Last year the society leaped to success with its production of Oklahoma and received the AIMS Award for Best Actress in a supporting role which was won by Donna Ruane for her unforgettable portrayal of Aunt Eller.

For the past two months there as not only been a lot of talk regarding Castlebar Pantomime’s move to Breaffy Areana, but also of who is playing Goldilocks! The directors of the show Sharon Lavelle and Antoinette Starken have been keeping the identity of the actress under close wraps! And its no good trying to get information out of other cast members or committee. “No Comment” seems to be the new mantra amongst cast and crew!!

Everyday Solution are five Mayo boys, one of whom has just finished his Leaving Cert. The five formed a band while at secondary school in Swinford. The band has gigged across the west of Ireland, headlining Enniscrone Festival this year, and the fast-rising Mayo band are playing the Grand Social in Dublin tomorrow, November 14, and have been a runaway success this year.
They are also reviving in Dublin the Saturday afternoon gigs that were once a feature of venues like McGonagles, the Underground and the Rock Garden, introducing young people to the excitement of live music again. The tickets sales follow the huge success EDS enjoyed in Vicar Street playing to 1,500 in August.
