Thrill on the Hill official launch tomorrow night

Do you want to become a world record breaker, have a great day out and learn to dance like Michael Jackson while you're at it? Thrill on the Hill, in aid of the Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Respiratory Unit in Mayo General Hospital, will take place on June 3 2012 in McHale Park, Castlebar. The event will be officially launched in Breaffy House Resort this coming Saturday night, March 17 (St Patrick’s Day) at 8pm. Music will be provided by the Hebe Jebies Band and there will be a dancing demonstration by the Mayo Dance Factory. Admission is €10 and it will all go to the Cystic Fibrosis building fund at Mayo General Hospital.

Following their highly successful showing of the GAA related drama, The Pitch in Breaffy GAA Centre last January, Moth Productions return to Breaffy on Friday March 23 with their hilarious comedy Victor’s Dung.

Written and directed by the multi-talented Seamus O’Rourke, this drama relays the pathetic life and times of the rather uncouth Cavan farmer Victor Maguire, whose knowledge and approach to modern living is somewhat restricted. With the award winning actor and director Seamus O’Rourke playing the part of Victor, this is an entertaining night to remember and those who saw and heard him in Breaffy Clubhouse last January in The Pitch will certainly not want to miss this performance. Ably assisted by Charlie McGuinness and Tommy Sharkey, who are also members of the Corn Mill Theatre Group, Carrigallen, this one-act play is a must for all drama lovers. With local artistes in music, song and drama augmenting the main act, the night’s entertainment commences at 8.30pm and should end at around 10.30pm. Delorentos will launch The Clubhouse into rock history tomorrow night

Tomorrow night Saturday, March 10, sees The Clubhouse at Castlebar Celtic get its official launch party when the brilliant Delorentos will be bringing their Little Sparks Tour to the county town. The aim of Castlebar’s new music venue is to promote some of the best independent local and national original artists and bands over the coming months, with two major international acts to be announced for the independent music venue over the coming weeks. Castlebar’s music scene will be getting a much needed injection and a further lease of life.

James Morrison, the BRIT Award-winning English singer-songwriter and guitarist, comes to The Royal Theatre on Wednesday, August 22. As the title of James Morrison’s third and by far best album suggests, The Awakening is the sound of an artist coming of age. In his personal life Morrison has become a father, while losing his own father after the latter’s long battle with alcoholism and depression. At the same time, Morrison, 26, has matured as a singer, songwriter, and musician, enabling him to channel all of that emotion into his most accomplished collection of songs yet. “My first two albums felt like practice shots,” he says, “and now I’ve graduated. In many ways this feels like my first proper album.”

The European premiere of Mayo-born composer Patrick Cassidy’s ‘Famine Remembrance’ will take place at a special celebration to commemorate the centenary of St Colman’s Church in Claremorris on April 13. Now living in North America, Cassidy is widely known for his musical scores for many Hollywood movies, including Hannibal, Veronica Guerin, Kingdom of Heaven, Che Guevara, King Arthur, Layer Cake and most recently The Tree of Life starring Brad Pitt.

The WhistleBlast Quartet – Ken Edge (saxophones and clarinet), Mary Curran (French horn), Síle Daly (oboe and cor anglais) and Andrew Synnott (piano) – a group of professional classical musicians is performing a fabulous and accessible concert at 7.30pm on Sunday, March 11 in Belmullet. The programme features a short version of Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf, narrated and arranged by Ken Edge, Stravinsky Miniatures, Paganini Variations on solo saxophone, film music and more. The performance is for all ages and musical tastes and is bringing this wonderful mini-orchestra to Belmullet’s modern and innovative arts centre, Áras Inis Gluaire.
