Westport United look to bridge twenty five year gap

Fri, May 11, 2012

On Sunday in Terryland Park, Westport United will go looking to make it lucky number seven when they take on Athenry FC in the Connacht Junior Cup final. Standing in Westport United's way will be the defending champions who are going for their third Connacht Junior Cup win on the trot. Picking up the title would be quite a coup for the relatively inexperienced management duo of Kieran Mulchrone and James Fahy who have taken over in the United hot seat this season. While the management duo may be inexperienced at this level, there is plenty of experience to draw on with the likes of Kevin Joyce, Martin Geraghty, Danny Schaill, Gerry McLoughlin, Dave Cameron, Dave Hoban and Pat Fitzgerald all with plenty of big game experience under their belts over the years.

One man’s loss who will be felt majorly is that of Joe Lawless who is battling to be fit and part of the squad for Sunday's game, and the inspirational leader will be kicking every ball of the action on Sunday, be it on or off the field. Westport's route to the final has seen them overcome Corrib Rangers, Cloonfad United, Corrib Celtic in their first three rounds, with Straide and Foxford United being put to the sword by six goals to two in the last eight, with Ballinasloe Town putting up a very tough battle in the semi-final with Westport finally overcoming them 1-0 in the end.

No such thing as a quite weekend in the GAA

Fri, May 11, 2012

I was out of the country last weekend on a cycling holiday in Germany (more anon). I deliberately stayed away from all forms of communication until I arrived back in the country. By the time I landed in Dublin I was bursting for information on all of last weekend’s sporting activities. I called a few friends on the trek home from Dublin Airport and managed to get a good account of most of the action. The first conversation I had informed me of Kilkenny’s demolition job on Cork in the league final. These Kilkenny boys are simply in a different league to most others. I have watched them a couple of times earlier this year when they appeared to be just going through the motions, but once they get a whiff of a trophy they invariably rack it up a few notches. Jimmy Barry Murphy will, for the first time since his appointment as Cork manager, realise that the honeymoon period is over and his task of landing the Liam McCarthy is an enormous one when you consider the conveyor belt of young talent Brian Coady has at his disposal. But it is not just the talent that they produce year on year – it is their entire application and appetite for success that makes them so exceptional.

Mayo look to get back to winning trophies

Fri, May 11, 2012

It has been an up and down couple of years for those involved with the Mayo ladies senior football squad. Last year it all came to a head on the league front when they were relegated from division one without winning a single game. On Sunday in Parnell Park, they will be looking to make it back to the top table of football when they take on the near neighbours Galway in the division two final in Parnell Park in Dublin. In the league stages of the competition Mayo saw off almost all comers winning six of their seven games with the only minor blot on their copy book coming with a draw against Fermanagh.

Mayo met Galway in the opening round of the league stages in Tuam, way back at the start of February where they ran out comprehensive 3-14 to 1-7 winners, which was the perfect start for new manager Fr Mike Murphy who took over the side on a full-time basis this year, having filled in a part time capacity in the past. Mayo have put up big scores on a number of sides in the earlier rounds scoring 3-13 against Waterford, 2-11 against Clare, 2-12 against Tipperary, and scored 4-6 against Kerry in their semi-final in Banagher a fortnight ago.

Back to London for the Mayo hurlers

Fri, May 11, 2012

The last time that the Mayo hurlers made a trip across the water to take on London in competitive action they made the headlines for all the wrong reasons when they missed their flights back from the UK capital. And less than two months on, the gods that governed the draw for the second round of the Christy Ring Cup ensured that Mayo would have to make that trip all over again.
