A man whose car, the tyre of which had cord and wire exposed, collided into a motorbike was before Castlebar District Court this week.

As was reported last week, it is all change in the Mayo League next season thanks to the restructuring of the five divisions into six divisions of eight teams each. The final shake up of the divisions was sorted out last weekend with play off games in the old Premier Division and Division One. In the Premier Division play off Clew Bay United saw off Bangor Hibs 4-1 in Manulla, while in the Division One play off Kiltimagh/Knock United beat Castlebar Celtic B 2-1 in Swinford.

The Straide Badminton Club will recommence from the summer break in the Davitt Community Centre on Tuesday October 12 at 8.30pm.

Cup finals are well known for surprises across the globe, but before even a ball has been kicked in this year’s Mayo FA Cup final there is a big surprise already and that is the two teams who will be taking to the field on Sunday. When the season began, there would not have been many punters out there willing to take a punt on both Fahy Rovers and Straide and Foxford United winning the competition, let alone both of them making it all the way to Milebush on finals day. Sunday will offer some kind of redemption to whichever side comes out on top as both teams get used to the fact they will not be playing in the Super League next season, as both sides failed to escape from the bottom four which dropped through the trap door. Next season they will be competing in the newly formed Premier A league.

The Super League has been firmly split into two camps for most of the season, and now with only four games to go for the vast majority of the sides the next month will shape the winners and losers. At the top of the table, Westport United, Iorras Aontaithe, and Ballina Town are going at it hammer and tongs for the title, while everyone else from fourth placed Manulla down is battling to beat the drop. It is going to be one hell of an exciting end to the season.

The full concentration of all Mayo League sides will return to league action this weekend after being involved in both league cup and Connacht Gold cup action over the past few weeks. Iorras Aontaithe who are sitting on top of the table after eight games will be looking to shake off last weekend’s defeat at the hands of Swinford in the Westaro Cup when they host third place Westport United in Carne on Saturday evening. The Covies themselves were knocked out of the Westaro Cup last weekend by Straide and Foxford United, but both sides’ real designs this year are on the Super League title. A win for Westport would see them leapfrog Iorras in the table and still have a game in hand on the Barony men. Defending champions Ballina Town, who ran through Fahy Rovers for a short cut by a score of 6-1 in cup action last weekend, will have another trip to west Mayo on Saturday when they take on Manulla in Carramore. Brendan Kenny’s side hit a rocky patch in the league recently and a win on Saturday evening would be a huge boost to their chances of retaining their title. They have however played a game more than Iorras who are a point ahead of them in the table, and they have played two games more than third placed Westport United who are a point behind them.

Castlebar Celtic got their season off to a winning start in the EA Sports Cup with a 1-0 preliminary round win over Salthill Devon in Celtic Park on Tuesday night. Peter Dravins was the hero for Celtic scoring an 87th minute winner over the Galway side who were promoted from the Newstalk A league to division one of the Airtricity league last season, a feat Celtic will be hoping to emulate this season. The win puts Castlebar Celtic into the first round proper of the competition where they will take on Finn Harps at home. A win over the Donegal men will keep Celtic moving in the right direction ahead of their kick off in the Newstalk A league in May.
