New jobs to deal with jobless

Five new jobs have been created at the Department of Social and Family Affairs office in the city to help deal with the increased numbers of unemployed in Galway.

The appointments, which took place across the country last week with 115 workers being employed in 48 separate dole offices throughout Ireland, came after news earlier in the week that unemployment made its largest one month increase on record, hitting 7.8 per cent.

It is reported that there is currently an up to 12 weeks waiting list to sign on in some areas of the country.

Social and Family Affairs Minister Mary Hanafin said on Friday that the extra staff will ease the pressures faced by the offices in the coming weeks with the rising unemployment and the onset of the Christmas season.
