Patrick J. Farragher was a dark-complexioned individual but was otherwise of regular features. His heavy moustache gave him a military appearance. Up to September 1879, Farragher held the lease to a farm on the Mannin Estate in Aghamore.

Darkie Barton

Professional boxer Kid Johnson, an American light-weight champion, was touring Ireland in 1902. In January, while at the Town Hall in Castlebar, he sparred with Darkie Barton. The Boxing World & Mirror of Life announced that Barton, an 'old man' in boxing circles, held his own, and afterwards, the pair agreed to a formal match. In September 1901, Barton had been knocked out in one minute and five seconds by Henry Brown, Liverpool's 'coloured champion'. Browne had also disposed of Johnson in four rounds.

Last Saturday, May 21, was the 158th anniversary of the opening of the Presbyterian Church on Lower Charles Street, Castlebar. Henry Todd of the firm Todd, Burns and Co of Henry Street Dublin laid the foundation stone on 31 July 1863. He performed a similar service at Roscommon earlier that day. Todd was a generous patron of the Presbyterian Church.

Faction fighting and duelling were common in Mayo well into the 19th century. Duelling with swords or pistols was the preserve of gentleman and military men. On the other hand, faction fights were fought with sticks, clubs, stones, and other instruments of bludgeon by large numbers of people who gathered after Mass or at fairs, patterns, or other events.

Much of my work on the County Mayo Famine Deaths Database has focussed on inquests. Dr John Atkinson was the Ballina District coroner when the Famine took hold. Atkinson threw himself body and soul at the increasingly grim workload.

Local Green Party Councillor for Athlone-Moate Municipal District, Cllr Louise Heavin, has welcomed two new heritage initiatives - a survey of barn owls and a survey of thatched buildings across Westmeath, both of which were discussed at the most recent local authority heritage forum meeting.
