It was almost 10pm on Saturday night when Callinan’s coach pulled out from Parnell Park in Donnycarney. And there were a lot of contented men on that bus. On the back window read the banner – TEAM GALWAY.

Galway hurlers blow hot and cold, then hot again

In September 1997 Clare beat Tipperary in the All Ireland final by a point, 0-20 to 2-13. So when Davy Fitzgerald, who was the best goal-keeper in the country in those years, after watching his side suffer a heavy-nine point defeat to Galway last Sunday evening said: "You don't win any championships in the month of February", it would have been rude not to nod sagaciously and agree.

McIntyre urges hurling fans to get behind Galway on Sunday

The Galway hurlers will take on Waterford at 2.30pm this Sunday at Pearse Stadium. It is the first time these two teams have met since the Déise sensationally snatched victory when a Galway win looked in the bag last summer in the All-Ireland quarter final.

Twenty years, not out

Twenty years, is a very long time in any individual’s journey through life. And1989 seems like a different planet compared to some of the advances and negatives that we have experienced in the country over the past two decades. Cork won the All-Ireland football championship that year, whereas Mayo will feel that they should have if Anthony Finnerty’s genuine goal opportunity had flashed into the net. How foot-balling history would have changed then, as John O’Mahony would probably never have left his native land to join Leitrim and then Galway had they won that joust. It was also the year of the famous “Keady Affair” in hurling. Names like Pat Fox, Larry Tompkins, John Kerins, RIP, T.J. Kilgannon, the Bonnars, Willie Joe Padden and the only man to win a senior football and hurling All-Ireland in the same year - Teddy McCarthy - were idols to look up to and the Irish soccer chant of “Ole, Ole, Ole” was only in its infancy.
