The Mám Éan Geotrail was launched in January at Ionad Pobail an Mháma with two guest speakers. Brian McConnell, retired principal geologist at Geological Survey Ireland, highlighted the geological connections with North America. Frank Conroy of Maam community gave a fascinating account of the local history and folklore linked with Mám Éan and its use down through the ages by the local community in Maam.

Four Hardy MTB cyclists have completed their own lifetime achievement by cycling the height of Mount Everest - 8,848m - by mountain bike, over a locally named climb called Skelp (or to be named Alp De Skelp after this challenge), a hill that is located on the Western Way trail coming from Leenane to Westport.

A group of Mayo mountain bike enthusiasts are taking on the Everesting challenge - ascending and descending a total of 8,848 metres, the elevation of Mount Everest, to raise much-needed funds for Croí, the heart and stroke charity, and Mayo Mental Health Services.

Half a million euro has been allocated to upgrade the Western Way in Connemara, including improvements to the walking trail and Derroura bike trail, and develop a ‘Eurovelo’ cycle route from Lennane to Kinvara.

More than €500,000 in Government funding has been secured for the development of outdoor recreation infrastructure in Galway, including greenways, a mountain bike trail, and an angling location.

The Minister for Rural and Community Development, Michael Ring, TD, announced that he has approved over €100,000 to invest in the enhancement of five walking trails (€20,000 each) in Mayo under Measure 1 of his Department’s Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme (2019).

This year’s Oughterard Trails Festival runs from June 15 to 17, highlighting the rugged beauty of Connemara by showcasing the wonderful walks, scenery and the heritage of this unique area.

The Galway Walking Club's marathon and half marathon will take place in Connemara on Saturday, August 12.
