The Heritage Council has announced that €600,000 will be allocated to heritage projects under its 2015 Community-based Heritage Grants Scheme. The grants will aid in the continuing conservation and development of Irish heritage through the support of local community-based groups.

More than 250 people from Community and Voluntary groups from all around County Galway were honoured at the Cathaoirleach’s Community Awards ceremony last Thursday in the Claregalway Hotel. The Awards, previously called the Mayors Awards, recognise and celebrate community and voluntary activity around County Galway. Twelve awards were up for grabs after a public call for nominations was made back in October.

Moate has a proud tradition of both ceili bands and Irish traditional music. The Moate Ceili Band was founded in the early 1930s and was the first provincial band to broadcast from Radio Eireann. It broadcast regularly on Irish radio over the next 15 years (on average 10 times per year) and toured extensively both in Ireland and England.
