AIT women’s soccer club are very grateful to Leisure World Athlone for their generous sponsorship of a new kit. The girls recently enjoyed an eventful social evening in the centre. 

2009 marks an important milestone for the GAA as it celebrates 125 years of its existence. This Sunday, May 10, has been designated as La na gClub, a day when every club in the country is encouraged to organise events to mark the occasion.

This Sunday afternoon sees the Mayo League take to the field in the semi final of the Oscar Traynor Cup in the lion’s den of the AUL complex in Clonshaugh, Dublin. Their opposition, the much fancied Athletic Union League, are the favourites to lift the cup this year. Mayo manager Declan Kilkelly was confident going in to the game when he spoke to the Mayo Advertiser earlier this week. “We have a great squad here and if we play to the maximum of our potential, we have a great chance of making the final.” The Mayo side had a warm up game last week with a charity match against Iorras Aontaithe in Carne, which Mayo won 3-2, which Kilkelly believed to be a “great bonding session for the lads and preparation for this weekends challenge.”

The beginning of March heralds the start of the road running season and over the next few weeks there are plenty of races for those preparing for the National 10k Championships on April 26 at Navan.

Taking a practice kick at Kilkenny Castle where the line up of this year’s comedy festival was announced earlier this week, star of RTE’s The Panel, Neil Delamere reiterated that it was indeed him who scored the winning goal at last year’s comedian’s soccer match.

I had the privilege of introducing the last man who captained a successful Mayo All Ireland winning minor team to my own young man and a few of the Castlebar under- 12s at their training session last Saturday morning at McHale Park. Michael Fitzmaurice, captain of the Mayo minors in 1985, approached my car with a bag of footballs on his back. I hadn’t a clue who he was until he removed his cap. Even then it took me a second or two to recognise the former star as, like a few more of us he is, by now, follically challenged. He sat into the car and we chatted football for a while. I was delighted to discover that he was a part time GAA coaching officer, travelling around to a number of national schools down around his home place, Lacken. Michael was a great footballer and I recall making a number of telephone calls to his home in the mid nineties trying to persuade him to get involved with the Mayo senior set up of my tenure. He couldn’t make the commitment at the time for a number of reasons and I have to say it was our loss. Still it was good to have the chat and to reminisce about times past. Michael had spent the morning working with a Mayo under-14 development squad and I am sure they will be better players because of his tutoring. So also will the national school kids in and around Lacken.

Connaught Champions, Sionann O'Reilly-Collins, Katie Kelly, Ciara O'Murchadha-Flynn and Laura Mc Intaggart made up the Athlone Community College team taking part in the 40th All- Ireland Schools Cross Country Championship on Saturday March 7.

Switch on your television this summer and if you tune into the RTÉ News any week there is championship action and you are sure to be see the face or hear the voice of a Mayo man. Last year Kilmaine native Jonathan Mullin was appointed RTÉ News first ever GAA correspondent, and he took some time out to speak about his love for the games and where he sees the association going forward in the next few years.

Fianna Fáil has confirmed the selection of Mickey Feeney on the party ticket to contest the Mayo County Council election in June.
