What a thoroughly enjoyable eclectic event this has become — The 2017 Galway Garden Festival will take place on Saturday July 1 and Sunday July 2, at Claregalway Castle. This will be the eighth year of an unique and charming garden event which has developed a national profile. It will showcase a wonderful gathering of the very best of rare and special plant traders from all over Ireland, present a programme of expert talks, a fine artisan food and crafts arena including the best of ‘Made in Galway’, as well as a host of musical entertainment and open-air performance.

The 2017 Galway Garden Festival will take place on Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd July, at Claregalway Castle. This will be the 8th year of an uniquely charming garden event which caters for specialist and eclectic tastes.

THE WINDOWS authors and artists anthology, co-edited by Cavan based poets Heather Brett and Noel Monahan, has for the past quarter century been an important outlet for emerging artists, and writers who have yet to publish a first book.

A new year in the life of Mayo Association Dublin was marked by the 2017 annual general meeting held recently in the Sandymount Hotel, Dublin 4. The new chairperson is Julie Doyle, the fifth female chair since the association's foundation in 1905. Another woman to take a position at the top table is Grace Heneghan, who will take over as secretary. They join Bernardine Walsh-Cummins (public relations officer), Michael Kealy (treasurer), Mona McGarry (president), Eddie Melvin (vice president), and Frank Fleming (honorary life president) who were reappointed to their offices for a second year.

Fr Pat Connaughton, Bishop Casey’s secretary for a while, recalled a time when he and the bishop were going to a meeting in the archbishop’s house in Thurles. “Our car broke down. No matter. We were near Thurles. We left it on the side of the road, and walked the rest of the way, the bishop’s arms swinging by his side. We were passed by Bishop Kevin McNamara, in many ways the very antithesis of Casey. McNamara looked out the window, and remarked to his driver: ‘There goes Eamonn in drama again.’

"People in the country in a position to know have stated that a national emergency may arise any moment, and an attack on the country may be imminent", so warned MJ Egan, County Commissioner for Mayo at a public meeting in Ballyhaunis in August 1940. An official state of emergency had already been in place since being proclaimed in the Dáil on September 2 1939, the day after Nazi Germany invaded Poland. Egan was principally Mayo County Secretary, but as County Commissioner his role was to create a network of parish councils that would maintain services in the event of an invasion and the possible incapacitation of central government. The Ballyhaunis meeting created its own council, bringing the figure to over 100 councils formed in 76 Mayo parishes. Since the fall of France to the Nazis in mid-1940, Britain was forced to tighten its own rationing programme. This had knock-on effects for Ireland. A key function of the parish councils would be the securing and distribution of food in a post-invasion scenario. Egan reported to, and received instruction from the new Department of Supplies under Minister Seán Lemass. It was through Egan as County Commissioner that a series of emergency precautions and directions were issued to the Mayo public.

Deputy Peter Burke has had confirmation from the Secretary of the Constituency Commission that the report on any boundary changes will is expected to be published in early summer, and cannot be published any later than July 6.
