Work of Knock airport study group progressing

Last Friday saw the latest meeting of the study group that was established earlier this year to examine the future growth options and the long term viability of Ireland West Airport Knock. The board of the airport is pleased with the progress that has been made so far in this process. Managing director of the airport Joe Gilmore said this week that he is “pleased with the progress that has been made to date” and that despite some “initial concerns with the process”, airport directors and regional representatives have “succeeded in convincing the Department of the strong business case for future investment into the airport and the important role other regional airports can also play”. Ireland West Airport Knock has, he said, “proven its capability in the past in developing an impressive international route network with established airline partners and growing passenger numbers to close to 700,000, of which a large component are returning visitors and new tourists for the region, contributing over €120m in annual revenues. This provides a substantial dividend for the region on an annual basis, in addition to the critical role the airport continues to play for business travellers and commuters to the UK”.

New fights from Knock to Leeds-Bradford from March

Flybe, Europe’s largest regional airline, has this week announced a new service flying three times a week between Ireland West Airport Knock and Leeds Bradford Airport in the UK. The new route will commence on March 25 and will run on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays. This will be the third addition to Flybe’s route network at the airport following the introduction of new services to Edinburgh and Manchester last year.

Boost to tourism sector in Mayo as future of IWAK is secured

There was positive news for the tourism industry in Mayo this week after Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport Leo Varadkar announced that the Government will continue to provide funding for Ireland West Airport Knock for 2011 and beyond. IWAK will be one of the four regional airports — along with Donegal, Kerry and Waterford— to be funded in 2012.

Citylink expands route network with wi-fi on buses

Galway based bus operator Citylink has expanded its popular service, and now has wifi on-board all coaches. The independent company offers 15 daily services to Dublin and Dublin airport. There are eight direct services from Galway to Shannon with additional departures from Galway at 5.30am, 11.30am, and 2.30pm, and a new departure from Shannon to Galway at 9.30am.
