NUI Galway has been awarded a European Research Council Starting Grant of almost €1.5 million over five years from Horizon 2020’s European Research Council, to identify a new biological target for new treatment development of schizophrenia.

The Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Michael Ring, officially opened the Gym and High Performance Training Centre at the AIT International Arena last Thursday, November 26.

Staff at Mayo University Hospital received two awards at the recent Saolta University Health Care Group Staff Recognition Awards which took place on Friday November 13 at an event in the Sligo Park Hotel. The Athy family are of great antiquity in Galway. They were originally Anglo-Norman, but on coming here, they quickly became one of the original Tribes. Their estates were mainly in the Oranmore area, they owned the Rinville Estate. They are credited with being the first family to erect a stone building in the city in the 13th century. BBC Science programme presenter, Professor Iain Stewart will deliver a geology public lecture at NUI Galway on Monday next, November 9. The lecture, ‘Between a Rock and a Hard Place: communicating geology to society’, is a collaboration between Galway Earth and Ocean Sciences Student Society, Galway Geological Association and NUI Galway’s Earth and Ocean Sciences.

A survivor of the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, will give a talk about his experience of the Holocaust in the Seminar Room of the Irish Centre for Human Rights at NUI Galway on Sunday, 8 November at 1pm.
