Black day for Westport as fish factory announces it is to close

The imminent shut down of Skrettings Ireland fish feed factory in Westport, announced this week, is devasting news for the 22 workers and dozens of subsidiaries at the plant. The company, which will close by the end of the year, has been in Westport since 1989, with almost half the staff working there for more than 20 years. Latest live register figures recorded 1,846 people already signing on in Westport up to the end of August, and SIPTU shop steward Owen O’Malley, a worker at the plant since 1990, has described this latest job loss news as a massive blow.

McGrath to run the line in Champions League

Mayo will be represented in the first round of the Champions League next week when Damien McGrath steps out on to the field in the biggest club competition in the world. McGrath’s stock has risen highly in Mayo and nationally over the past number of years and this is just the latest high level promotion for him. McGrath will be first assistant referee, alongside the all Irish team of Alan Kelly who will be the referee, Ken Hennessey, and Paraic Sutton, who will act as fourth official. The two additional assistants are Anthony Buttimer and Neil Doyle. “It’s a great honour for me and also for the Mayo referees branch,” McGrath said.

Club Mantra reopens with a bang

Club Mantra Castlebar will reopen its doors this Saturday August 28 to reveal a newly renovated nightclub. A new state of the art smoking area with access to the top bar is the most substantial change to the nightclub, though renovations also include a new decor incorporating new flooring and seating which have transformed the club into a brighter, more open space. To celebrate the club’s new look and reopening, the price of admission for the night has been cut to only €5, with plenty of promotional offers also available on the night as Mantra’s way of welcoming customers to its new home. Mayo GAA €10,000 challenge

Mayo GAA clubs are invited to take on GAA stars Seán Óg Ó hAilpín and Alan Brogan in the Suremen Challenge this August. The Suremen Challenge tests club players’ GAA football and hurling skills and accuracy using the specially created Suremen Challenge Accuracy Screen – a large screen that features holes of varying sizes for precision scoring.
