I have written before about a terrifying night in Galway when the Black and Tans went berserk following an incident at Galway railway station on September 8 1920. A drunken Tan, Edward Krumm, confronted the crowd of passengers as they emerged from the train. He produced a pistol and began to fire into the air, causing widespread panic. Séan Mulvoy jumped on his back but Krumm managed to shoot him as they fell to the ground. In turn a man stepped from the crowd and shot Krumm dead.

Shortly after 9am this morning, An Taoiseach Enda Kenny handed in his nomination papers to contest the upcoming general election. The Taoiseach was joined by his party colleagues Minister of State, Michael Ring TD and Michelle Mulherin TD who also submitted their nomination papers for the election.

Mayo County Council's road safety officer has issued an appeal to those contesting the upcoming election when erecting election posters. Noel Gibbons said this week: "With high winds forecast over the next few days we have urged candidates not to hang banners and posters from road bridges and pedestrian bridges, as they could become loose, be interfered with by third parties, and could fall onto fast-moving traffic. There are certain driving hazards that people often expect when getting behind the wheel, including slippery roads, an animal darting out or reduced visibility due to driving rains. A Mayo man serving a life sentence for murdering his mother has been given a two and a half year sentence for throwing boiling water at a prison officer. The court heard Celyn Eadon (24) has sustained irreversible organic brain damage due to drug abuse in his teens. He was convicted last year of stabbing his mother to death in 2011 while in a drug induced psychosis. The attack on the prison officer, which was captured on CCTV, was one of a series of violent incidents which occurred around the time Eadon was moved from the Central Mental Hospital (CMH) to Mountjoy following his murder conviction.

More than 500 volunteers from units of the Order of Malta Ireland Ambulance Corps will descend on Athlone on September 18 and 19 to showcase their lifesaving skills as part of the All-Ireland First Aid Competitions.
