Fine Gael leader Dep Enda Kenny has welcomed funding sanctioned by the Department of Community, Rural, and Gaeltacht Affairs to Mayo County Council for providing and upgrading rural recreational projects in north Mayo. This funding will be used to extend the North Mayo Coastal Trail and develop a linear cycle route as part of the national cycle network as well as improved signage, parking, and toilet facilities in certain areas. It will form part of the €750,000 investment by Fóram Pobail Iarthuaisceart Mhaigh Eo’s plan for the area.

Fine Gael Leader, Enda Kenny, TD, has welcomed the decision to improve the broadband speeds at Cornanool National School just outside Castlebar. The Department of Education and Science have confirmed to the Fine Gael Leader that they will shortly be signing a contract with a new internet service provider. Once the contract is signed, it is expected that it will take six to eight weeks to complete. This will entail the provision of a new mobile broadband facility that will provide 1MB per second broadband in comparison to the much smaller capacity already available at the school.

Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny TD has received assurances from the HSE that specialist mental health services in Castlebar will be adequately met with supports in place to meet the social needs of those concerned. This follows the closure of the Psychiatric Day Centre which operated for many years at the Sacred Heart Hospital. Fine Gael Leader Enda Kenny TD has criticised the Fianna Fáil/Green Government for what he calls “their reckless approach to job security and creation” as Mayo’s unemployment figures went through the roof over the past two years. The figures obtained from the Minister for Social and Family Affairs for January 2007 shows 4,760 people signing on in the county. This is compared to 12,114 in September 2009 and demonstrates the seriousness facing a substantial part of Mayo’s population.

Funding of €36,000 for Castlebar Voluntary Social Services based at Castle Street car park has been welcomed by the Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny TD.  The funding has been issued by the Department of Health and Children as part of their 2009 allocation from National Lottery funds. The funding has been issued to aid in refurbishment work at the social services centre which provides numerous important services around the wider Castlebar area.
