How refreshing it was to finally see a good honest championship match. The games to date in this year’s campaign have been either one sided affairs or ones of poor quality. No major surprises in round one of senior championship

image preview

Championship football often throws up its fair share of surprises but there were no major shocks to report after round one of the Shay Murtagh senior football championship. Athlone’s three point win over last year’s beaten finalists will have taken some by surprise but would hardly register as a shock. St Malachy’s came very close to pulling off a major upset over hot favourites Mullingar Shamrocks, losing out by a single point. Tubberclare marked their return to senior ranks with a one point win over Killucan while Castledaly and the Downs played out a draw. Meanwhile reigning champions Garrycastle got their title defence off to a winning start with three points to spare over Tyrrellspass.

The fact that they have not brought the Liam McCarthy back across the Shannon since 1988 probably has something to do with this tag. Judging by the way they disposed of the Cork challenge in the National Hurling League final at Thurles last Sunday evening they highlighted the fact they mean business this year. The first half of this game was as good as I've seen for some time, it was as close a championship pace as you're likely to see.

Connacht juniors let lead slip

Connacht head to Cork next Saturday in the final game of the Junior Rugby Interprovincial series looking to repeat their victory of last season over Munster.

Connacht can mix it with the big boys

Connacht left their hearts, bodies, and Heineken Cup dreams on the Sportsground pitch on Friday night, but it was a performance and a result that confirms Connacht Rugby can go places.

Rejuvenated Duffy
