There is no shortage of action this weekend on the GAA scene in Mayo with the county senior championship, intermediate championship, and Minor A championship finals taking centre stage.

The televised draw for next year’s provincial championship which took place last Thursday was relatively kind to both Westmeath and Roscommon. Westmeath take on the winners of Wicklow and Carlow in a Leinster quarter-final. Louth, Longford or Kildare will provide the semi-final opposition should the Lake County win their opening game.

St James won their third West Board final in four years last Saturday at Pearse Stadium when they comprehensively defeated Michéal Breathnach’s in the SuperValu minor final by seven points.

Reasonable observers of this year’s senior county championship wouldn’t be too happy with the fare served up so far. At a personal level I am hugely disappointed not to be involved in the county final with Crossmolina. I am not being disrespectful to any team when I suggest that I thought we would have made the final, particularly having beaten Ballaghaderreen in the quarter final. Several fancied outfits, other than us had their frailties exposed too when push came to shove.

Let’s face it dear reader, this is the bleakest part of the year. Evenings getting ever shorter, leaves falling faster than property prices and rain bucketing down all do little to warm the heartstrings. Not to mention that with very few matches between now and next February there’ll be very little for us hurlers on the ditch to talk about over the next few months. Thankfully Garrycastle, Tubberclair, and Caulry all have Leinster club matches coming up and hopefully one or all of them can get on a run and give a timely boost to football in the county. Otherwise we’ll only have Donal Og’s personal life or Tadhg Kenelly’s ‘revelation’ to discuss and we don’t want that now do we?

These are interesting days in the League of Ireland, and the splendid Tallaght Stadium will provide an ideal backdrop for tomorrow’s high stakes clash between Shamrock Rovers and Galway United.

Next Sunday at Pearse Stadium promises to be an exciting day for the two Connemara teams that won the Galway County intermediate and junior football championships this year as they set out on their quest to bring more glory to their parishes.

The top two club football sides at minor level over the past few years, St James and Corofin, face off this Saturday at 2.30pm in Pearse Stadium in the county minor “A” final.

For those of you who are not going to any live games this Sunday and intend sitting in and watching the box for a few hours, there will be some high quality GAA viewing on TG4 for the entire day.
