When I arranged to meet traditional music legend Frankie Gavin in a quiet corner of the Galmont this week, I didn’t know what to expect. I’d heard he had been seriously ill, had lost a significant portion of his body weight and that wonderful hair, but when he came around the corner, wrapped in a grey tweet coat and scarf, he was the same Frankie I’d ever known. Buzzing with energy and life, a head full of hair and keen to sit down for coffee and croissants to share the story of the last year during which he feared for his mortality.

Once again the evenings are beginning to close in and all forms of ghouls and ghosts begin to rise from beyond. Next Friday night, October 26, Finbar Hoban Presents will return (for one evening only) to present a night of live entertainment at the Halloween Ball, with local acts Algorithm, Mervin Heverin and Michelle O'Sullivan. The shenanigans will take place at the original Finbar Hoban Presents venue - Bar Ritz- (upstairs in Mulroys Bar, Main Street, Castlebar).

The legendary Galway singer, Sean Keane, will be the special guest at a colossal gathering of musicians in aid of fellow musician, Áine Morgan at an event taking place in the Loughrea Hotel and Spa on Thursday, July 26.
