RNLI Galway marks three decades of heroism
Thirty years is both a lifetime and the blink of an eye—long enough to shape a legacy, yet fleeting when measured against the endless rhythm of the sea. On the evening of 27 March 1996 at 9pm, a quiet but profound promise was made along the shores of Galway Bay. That promise—to save lives at sea—has been kept, steadfastly and selflessly, by the volunteers of the Galway RNLI Lifeboat Station ever since.

The wind howled through Galway two weeks ago, not just in the physical tempest that uprooted trees and left scars upon the land, but in the sorrow and upset that swept through the hearts of its people. A county that has so often roared in triumph, lifted by the feats of its sporting heroes, this week bows its head in mourning.

Return of the anchorman
It’s been three and a half years since I left Galway. The winding streets, the salty winds and icy rain that blew life and excitement into your lungs were beginning to wane for a whole generation. I had spent three years at NUIG flitting between Drama Soc and Flirt FM radio, and in between squeezing out a bachelor’s degree in English and Classics together with a diploma in Irish. We came in as “freshers” just when the Celtic Tiger was unleashing its final booming roar, Rag Week and campus life were electric and Galway was alive.
