‘73 tractor still does the job

image preview

It must surely be a record that a new tractor purchased in 1973 has worked every year since, has the original tyres, and never got a puncture even once in all of 35 years. Martin Kelly of Ballinacor, Newbridge, purchased his first and only tractor, a Zetor, from Brogan’s of Ballymoe in the spring of 1973. He has used the tractor to cut hay, bring home turf, spread fertiliser, and do a hundred other jobs over this long period of time and while the tyres are “bald enough,” as Martin put it, he never had to remove a tyre since the day he got it. Martin intends to have his tractor on show at the vintage rally in Mountbellew, which will take place this Saturday and Sunday.

The Aga experience

image preview

Many people who have an Aga today lived in houses that had an Aga in the kitchen when they were children. There seem to be lots of pleasant memories from childhood that are associated with having an Aga in the kitchen, and for many such people it is top of their shopping list when setting up home. One friend of mine used to sit up on the shiny lid that is on top of the range (not recommended) when she was a child, and believe it or not she does the same thing some 30-plus years later. I was not brought up with an Aga in the house but both my grandparents and parents had solid fuel ranges and I still remember cooking breakfast in a big black cast iron pan on my grandmother’s red hot range. I also remember the constant need to get logs and logs and even more logs!

Dick Byrne - The man who brought light to Mayo

Terrible punishments awaited young transgressors in the Ireland of the 1950s. If a boy mitched from school he could end up in Letterfrack, the notorious so called industrial school, run by the Christian Brothers. It was a type of borstal, where, for almost a century, troubled boys were brutally chastened and subdued. Its grim, grey buildings still stand today, and if you pass them on a wet Connemara day, you wonder about the boys who were sent there from cities and towns around Ireland. Despite its change of usage to one of the foremost craft training centres in the country, it still looks a sad place to me. But back in the 50s and 60s its name struck terror in the hearts of most boys and youths. I remember seeing a boy handcuffed to a policeman sitting on the Dublin train. Word was whispered around the carriage that the boy was from Letterfrack. We all stared at him as if the poor fellow was an alien.
