When the newly elected Mayo County Council holds its inaugural meeting early next month, there will be four new faces taking their seats after last weekend's elections. We take a look at the new fresher councillors.

There will only be two female councillors on Mayo County Council for its new term starting June 2019, which is down from five female councillors who were elected in the 2014 local elections.

Five years on from losing their seats as councillors, two new Mayo County councillors were tasting success in the count centre on Sunday, while one, who opted out last time, also regained his seat after five years out of the game.

After all the counting was said and done in the local elections, just like five years ago, the Independent councillors elected now hold the balance of power in the council chamber.

After the drawn out process of the previous day - where most of the time was spent sorting ballots before the counting began things moved much smooter on Sunday, with the Westport count being completed in the early evening and the Ballina count not long after 10pm and just the Claremorris count which going by the tally figures looked a forgone conclusion wating to be finished in the early hours of the morning. 

THE TALLIES have answered many questions and left plenty of others unresolved. While the count for Galway city progresses slowly, the political analysts and anoraks fill in the long gaps with number crunching.

The morning is over and it is well into afternoon now. Already we are looking at changes in the city’s political landscape - and also at how some things remain the same.
