Mayo will take in 86 Syrian refugees this year, the members of Mayo County Council were informed this week. Síofra Kilcullen who is the chair of the newly established Mayo Interagency Resettlement Committee told the elected members of the plans. She told the meeting that Mayo is one of eight counties across the country which will be taking part in the resettlement programme.

Séan Duggan was one of the most high profile users of the facility, swimming there for more than 50 years. At the April meeting of the West Mayo Municipal District, the councillors were informed that a planning application for a house in Achill was up for refusal as it did not meet the guidelines laid down in the county development plan. Gabrielle McFadden and Paul Daly elected to the Seanad

Former Fine Gael Deputy for Longford-Westmeath, Gabrielle McFadden, has been elected to the Cultural and Educational panel of the Seanad. Ms McFadden learned of her election in the early hours of Tuesday morning when she secured her seat on the 23rd and final count.
