Ireland finish second with help from local athletes

Three Kilkenny athletes were part of the successful Ireland team which finished second in Banka Bystrica, Slovakia, at the weekend. Eileen O’Keeffe had a season’s best of 68.25m to take second place in the hammer. Aoife Hickey finished seventh in the shot with a put of 11.86m and Joanne Cuddihy ran the second leg of the third placed 4X400m relay team.

•The popular Galway Schools Soccer and Gaelic Football Academy returns to St Mary’s College this month. Two camps, from July 13 to July 17 and July 20 to July 24 will be held from 9am to 1pm daily. Directed by Sean Og de Paor, Martin Horgan, and Robert Grealish, this successful mix of sports has been a resounding success over the past decade. Quality coaching, fine facilities, and prizes for all participants - not forgetting the daily soup and roll for each child - are the hallmarks of the St Mary’s academy. Medals galore from Tullamore

It was an action packed weekend in the Tullamore Harriers Stadium for the under 12 to under 19 national juvenile track and field championships. The heavy rain on Saturday afternoon and the very blustery and showery weather on Sunday may have wet many but failed to dampen the spirit and enthusiasm of the athletes. With a fine haul of 17 All-Ireland medals (six gold, seven silver, and four bronze) it was a weekend to remember.
