For a century and a half, policymakers and preachers have tried to break Ireland’s matriarchal spine. First came colonial statutes that stripped women of ancient Brehon era property rights; then, after Independence, a clerical regime insisted a woman’s duty began and ended inside four walls and that maxim even made its way into the Constitution. Both forces notched victories on paper. Yet the lived chain of female authority, mother to daughter, sister to sister never snapped. I know, because that chain carried me out of Bessborough Mother-and-Baby Home and set me, my child, and several generations of my family back on our feet.

The recent United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report signed off by 195 governments is a truly terrifying read. It makes clear that Global Warming- characterised by more intense and frequent heatwaves, storms, rainfall, flooding and melting glaciers as well as rising sea levels, is due to human activity. It further stated that no part of the world is safe from its consequences and that these changes are accelerating.

Fulbright scholar and Notre Dame anthropologist joins GMIT as guest lecturer

GMIT has announced that Fulbright scholar and University of Notre Dame anthropologist, Dr Deb Rotman, has joined the GMIT Culture and Environment programme as a guest lecturer for the 2015/16 academic year. Dr Rotman will collaborate with GMIT Mayo and UCD on her project, “Clachans and Cultural Landscapes of County Mayo, Ireland: Local History, Folklore, and Archaeology of 19th-Century Domestic Sites.”
