To take part each child commits to reading six books over the summer months of July and August and if they complete the challenge they become a Summer Star with a certificate and a medal to prove it.

Five children from the Quay School in Westport have been named among the winners in this year's annual Cavan Crystal Poetry Competition. This national competition is open to children throughout the island of Ireland and while the Quay School has been among the winners in the past, it was extraordinary that five pupils from fifth and sixth classes were listed among this year's award recipients.

€10,000 raised for Western Care in Westport House open day

A fortnight ago, Westport House's annual open day in aid of and in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Western Care Association was held and it was a massive success. They were blessed with great weather, a great turnout, great atmosphere, great entertainment, great craic and a really great charity. Westport House was delighted to announce that €10,000 was raised through the event for Western Care. Both Western Care and Westport House would like to thank all of the people who gave generously to all the bucket shakers and in the raffle - instead of paying for admission to Westport House on the day.

Free open day at Westport House in aid of Western Care

Westport House is holding its annual open day from 12 noon to 6pm on Sunday May 29. The Browne family and their onsite adventure partners open up their venue which has been awarded The Best Family Holiday Destination in Ireland and all of the facilities for no charge in the hope that the public will dig deep for this year’s charity partner, Western Care which is celebrating 50 years of providing services for people with disabilities and autism across Mayo.

Great food and great value at Westport County Lodge

Westport is known for its fantastic views, tidy town of the year, tasty food and superb hospitality. Croagh Patrick is the centrepiece of the town and can be seen from every restaurant and hotel dining room. We were invited to eat at the Westport Country Lodge Hotel last Sunday evening, which is located in Aughagower, about two miles out of Westport on the Ballinrobe road.

Westport claims TidyTowns large town award

Westport was named Ireland's tidiest large town on Monday at the annual national TidyTowns Awards ceremony which was held in the Helix in Dublin. In total, Westport scored 322 marks, just one behind the overall winner Letterkenny. There were other award wins for Westport on the day, with Nicoal Sammon winning a Junior Community Hero award and the Edible Landscape Project in the town winning the Sustainable Development Award. 

Fun day at Westport Golf Club

A free Sunday fun day will take place at Westport Golf Club for girls and boys (six years plus) on November 11 from 2pm to 4pm.
