Brian Leyden to give a reading as part of Westport Arts Festival

The Westport Civic Trust has long contributed to the town's Arts Festival, and this year is proud to announce that Brian Leyden, the noted novelist, short story writer, memoirist, playwright, screenwriter, librettist and editor will give a reading of some of his works. This will be at The Creel, on the Quay in Westport on Thursday, September 29 at 8pm.

Westport Chamber Music Festival is ready to entertain

his year’s Westport Festival of Chamber Music takes place in Westport House on Friday September 9 at 8pm, and on Saturday September 10 at 12 noon, 8pm, and 10.30pm in the Town Hall Theatre. It will come to a close on Sunday September 11 at 3pm in Holy Trinity Church.  The three venues are ideal for chamber music, providing intimate acoustic experiences. Artistic director Hugh Tinney said: “Our Westport Festival has grown in the past three years into a cultural event that fits seamlessly into the Westport autumn, yet with an atmosphere and a following all of its own. Everything plays its part in this collaborative sharing between musicians, audience members, venues, organisers and other local supporters.”

Portwest to create fifty five new jobs in Westport

Mayo based company Portwest, one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of personal protective clothing and equipment has announced the creation of 55 new jobs. Over the next four years, staff levels will increase from 75 to 130 at its head office in Westport, Co Mayo. The family-run business has been based in Westport, for over a century where the now global company is run by a trio of brothers, Cathal, Owen and Harry Hughes. The Portwest brand is sold in more than 100 countries worldwide and turnover is also expected to rise from the current level of €125 million to €250 million over the next four to five years.

€10,000 raised for Western Care in Westport House open day

A fortnight ago, Westport House's annual open day in aid of and in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Western Care Association was held and it was a massive success. They were blessed with great weather, a great turnout, great atmosphere, great entertainment, great craic and a really great charity. Westport House was delighted to announce that €10,000 was raised through the event for Western Care. Both Western Care and Westport House would like to thank all of the people who gave generously to all the bucket shakers and in the raffle - instead of paying for admission to Westport House on the day.

A celebration of Mayo food at Westport Food Festival

The flagship event of this year's Westport Food Festival which runs from Friday June 24 to Sunday June 26 is The Banquet which takes place on Friday June 24 at 7pm. The Banquet is a "celebration of Mayo food" and will be held in Hotel Westport where a host of local chefs will combine their talents to create a fabulous four-star course feast for the senses. The feast will be followed by music and dancing late into the night.

Westport sculpture nominated in Irish Architecture Awards

The public realm space The Sentinel sculpture in Westport, is among 50 projects shortlisted for this year’s RIAI Irish Architecture Awards, which were announced by The Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland (RIAI). The Sentinal sculpture which was created by Ronan Halpin was commissioned by Westport Town Council in 2013 following the town winning the award for the ‘Best Place to Live in Ireland’.

Free open day at Westport House in aid of Western Care

Westport House is holding its annual open day from 12 noon to 6pm on Sunday May 29. The Browne family and their onsite adventure partners open up their venue which has been awarded The Best Family Holiday Destination in Ireland and all of the facilities for no charge in the hope that the public will dig deep for this year’s charity partner, Western Care which is celebrating 50 years of providing services for people with disabilities and autism across Mayo.
