Get ready for a whole week of exciting activities in the great outdoors around Westport and join in to both free and ticketed events. The Westport Duathlon Weekend event marks the beginning of an extensive activity programme for the Westport Get Out There Festival, organised by Westport Town Council and Westport Leisure Park, and runs from Saturday June 8 to Saturday June 15.

Martin Keating said that the launch to make Westport the activity capital of Ireland is currently being worked on. The director of services said that a strategy has been developed and will start to be implemented this year. It will be outlined in detail at the next area meeting.

A celebration day will be held in Westport House following Westport’s winning of The Irish Times Best Place to Live in Ireland competition. The event will take place on September 9 on the lawn of Westport House.

Guided walking tours of Westport take place every Wednesday for July and August, starting at The Clock (top of Bridge Street) at 11am.

The Carlton Hotel Group as a major sponsor of the 53rd International Rose of Tralee Festival has invited the 32 Roses to Westport, and its local hotel, the Carlton Atlantic Coast Hotel, which will host the Roses during their stay from August 15 to 16. This is the first time that the final 32 Roses will visit Westport as part of the welcoming tour to Ireland.

Westport has beaten competition from over 500 entries around Ireland and is now one of only five areas that remain in The Irish Times Best Place to Live in Ireland competition.

The Quay School, Westport holds its annual family fun day on Sunday June 10 from 3pm to 6pm. Entry is free and all are welcome.

The launch of the new Clew Bay Garden Trail by Minister of State, Michael Ring will take place in Connacht Gold Garden Centre, Lodge Road, Westport on Friday May 25 at 11am. The Clew Bay Garden Trail is a chain of 14 private gardens in Westport and the surrounding area which will open to the public on selected days during summer 2012.
