James Hardiman, who wrote the history of Galway, died on this day, November 13, 1855. He was born in Westport in 1782, the son of Tomás Ó hArgadáin and Marcella Hall. Irish was his first language. The family moved to Galway where his father had a ‘small but respectable shop’. He had hoped to study for the priesthood but he had to give up that idea when he lost his right eye in an accident. He studied law instead in the King’s Inns in 1804, became a solicitor in 1814 and worked in the Public Records Office from 1811-1830.

It was an historic day in the superb surrounds of Westport House in Mayo, for Castlegar AC athlete Abaas Adam Edris, who produced a top class, front running performance to secure the National Intermediate title at a thrilling edition of the 123.ie National Intermediate, Masters and Juvenile B Cross Country Championships. Edris has placed highly at National level in multiple recent editions of this event and finally got his reward for years of hard work to claim a famous win over the testing 8km distance last Sunday. Ultimately shaking off a strong Ennis Track challenge, Edris was a decisive winner of the men’s race over 8,000m, with the Galway athlete crossing the line in a time of 26:16.
