The Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Deputy Darragh O’Brien, has published a progress update on the planning measures he introduced one year ago to increase home ownership and restrict the practice of bulk purchasing by institutional investors.

It was encouraging to hear the Minister for Finance announce in his recent Budget speech an increase in the tax free threshold on gifts or inheritances from parents to children. The threshold now stands at €280,000 (increase of €55,000) with effect from 14 October 2015.

The property tax “will plunge thousands of low and middle income families into further financial hardship” while those with the “ability and means” to pay are protected by the Government.
