North Mayo waters could facilitate wave energy test site

The Ocean Energy Development Unit (OEDU) of Sustainable Energy Ireland (SEI) has deployed a weather buoy off the coast of north Mayo to monitor wave and weather conditions. The buoy, which is 10km off Annagh Head on the Atlantic coast of the Mullet Peninsula, was launched last week and will transmit information collected via satellite link to the OEDU at the civic offices in Belmullet. This information is the first of its kind available in Ireland and will facilitate the development of a full scale wave energy test site off the coast of north Mayo.

Mass employment for region from Belmullet wave energy centre

An investment by the Government in Ireland’s ocean energy development, through IDA Ireland, was announced this week, with significant research and development work to be undertaken at the national wave energy test site at Belmullet. If planning is obtained for the research site at Belmullet this will lead to the creation in the long term of between “500 and 600 jobs” through the harnessing of “unrivalled” wave power and the possibility that Ireland would become a lead exporter of large quantities of green electricity.
