Barna Waste composting centre to create ten jobs

Barna Waste has announced the planned opening of its regional composting centre at the Headford Road with the creation of 10 jobs. The new €6 million facility is the largest composting site in Connacht and is authorised to cater for up to 40,000 tonnes of waste annually. Initial weekly volumes of brown bin waste handled on site will be the equivalent of composting the annual food waste produced by a town of 4,000 inhabitants.

WEEE Ireland, the Irish compliance scheme for electrical and battery recycling, selected Mayo County Council as a recipient of its Special Merit Award and as a finalist in the WEEE Ireland Best Participating Local Authority Category for its hard work during the year and participation in the WEEE Ireland Collection Programme.

Anti gum litter campaign launched by Westmeath County Council

Cllr Frankie Keena, chairperson of the environment and water services SPC launched the council’s Gum Litter Awareness campaign at the Market Square in Mullingar recently. Junior Cert students from the Loreto College together with their teacher Grainne O’Kennedy were there to lend a helping hand giving out gum wraps and running a competition. The competition winner was Liz Tynan, Ballinea, who won a €100 Mullingar Chambers shopping voucher.

Forty thousand tonnes of household waste collected in Mayo

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has published its National Waste Report for 2010 which provides data on Ireland’s waste generation and management and the progress being made in meeting national and international waste targets.
