A delegation of residents living near a railway crossing at Kilnageer - between the villages of Breaffy and Belcarra - attended the June meeting of the Castlebar Municipal District of Mayo County Council this week to appeal to the councillors to support their calls for a full-time solution to the railway crossing - where a serious accident occurred between a train and car on Wednesday, April 29.

Just waiting for that grand stretch in the evening

There is, I’m telling ya. I felt it in me waters. Just a small one mind ya, not anything outrageous. But it’s there nonetheless, that stretch in the evening. Bawnmore Cross — Are we waiting for schoolchildren to die?

Last week another truck overturned at Bawnmore Cross in Claregalway, spilling its load of huge logs across the road, onto the walls and into a field. This was the thirtieth time that an accident has happened here in the past few years, but the more remarkable fact is that nobody has yet been killed, given its proximity to a local national school. Last week, Cllr Malachy Noone said that it is only a matter of time before we see a school uniform trapped under those logs and now locals have said they have had enough.
