Cycling enthusiasts are sick. Reading last week’s extensive coverage of the Salthill Cycleway issue in the Galway Advertiser caused our stomachs to drop as we read how the opinions of some of the elected councillors on the proposal have changed.

Cllr Donal Lyons says that public engagement surrounding the proposed Salthill temporary cycleway is ‘unprecedented’ as 7,500 submissions have been filed to the Galway City Council.

The Pollnarooma Residents Association is opposing the temporary cycleway in Salthill.

Cllr Donal Lyons says it ‘beggars belief’ that funding of one million euro is being allocated by the National Transport Authority for the temporary Salthill cycleway.

A temporary cycleway in Salthill will be introduced in March and is expected to stay in place for six months.

Local Fine Gael Senator, Aisling Dolan, has confirmed that a decision on the preferred route corridor for the TII Athlone to Galway section of the cycleway is due to be announced through public consultation at end of November/start of December 2021

The Salthill Cycleway pilot scheme is “a victory for everyone in the city”, but it has to be made work, and become the start of a new approach to transport in the city, one that will reduce, not increase, the city’s already chronic traffic congestion.

A feasibility study, identifying a suitable route for the Silverstrand to city centre walkway/cycleway, has been commissioned by the Galway City Council.
