The Galway Men’s Team won County Gold for the third year in a row, under manager Siobhan Kelleher, sharing the podium with Donegal and Kerry. The squad were led by Justin Lane, the inspirational captain of the men's team, and he also won the Pole Vault in a fine 2.30m clearance. He was fifth in the weight for Distance Throw.

The question is being asked as to what we as a nation could or should have done to improve the standard or quality of the athletes being sent to the Olympics every four years. Politicians such as Senator Eamon Coughlan have proposed that a programme should be rolled out in schools to introduce children to athletics and Minister of State for Sport and Tourism Michael Ring has emphasised the need for more money to be invested in our athletes in the future.
