Sweet, sweet victory for Kilkenny

Kilkenny notched up their 14th National Hurling League title after a ding-dong battle with the old enemy Tipperary at Thurles last Sunday. I thought that hurling at intercounty level was becoming a bit boring and predictable but Sunday's epic encounter has given me great hope for the coming championship. It's great to beat Tipperary any time but to beat them in their own backyard on final day is extra special.

Village and O’Loughlins march into last four

O’Loughlin Gaels, minus the services of Martin Comerford, recorded a comprehensive victory over Tullaroan as the St Canice’s Credit Union senior hurling quarter-finals began in earnest last Saturday afternoon in Lachtain Park, Freshford.

The Cats and the Blues served up a cracking National Hurling league seventh round tie that remained in doubt right up to full time. The visitors, after a blistering start with a Joe Boland goal led 1-6 to 0-4 in the opening 10 minutes. However by the 19th minute they had stretched the lead to six points before a brace of Richie Hogan points had the sides level 1-10 to 0-13 approaching half time. Three further unanswered points including two Henry Shefflin frees saw the home side lead by three points 0-17 to 1-10 at the break. On the restart David O'Callaghan narrowed the lead to one point before Paul Murphy's 18-minute point had Kilkenny five ahead. From there to the end the game intensified with the second David O'Callaghan goal putting his side 3-14 to 0-21 ahead in the 29th minute. A minute later Eoin Larkin netted to restore the lead before David Curtin equalised only to see Eoin Larkin and Richie Hogan add points to deprive them of a memorable result as the final score read Kilkenny 1-23 Dublin 3-15

The people of Kilkenny are in dreamland this week, having witnessed the four-in-a-row. It's not very often that a game of such importance lives up to expectations but in the year that marks the 125th anniversary of the GAA we got a final that will be spoken about for decades to come.

Kilkenny champs all progress in Leinster Championship

All three Kilkenny county champions negotiated their first round Leinster Championship matches last weekend, junior champion's Tullogher Rosbercon got the ball rolling in the best possible way by beating St Peregrines/Trinity Gael's of Dublin by 6 points in O'Toole Park on Saturday. Sunday saw Nowlan Park play host to a double header, intermediate champion’s Erin’s Own of Castlecomer pitted themselves against Carlow senior winners, Naomh Bríd of Old Leighlin. This game went down to the wire. The Comer men eventually came out on top by 2 points in what was described as a cracking game. The Old Leighlin men are very passionate about their hurling, they went to war last Sunday without their veteran centre back and former county and Leinster star, Johnny Nevin, who was away in Australia on over 40s duty. Nevin may be getting on, but by all accounts he still has the drive and passion to compete at the highest level. Comer's cause was helped in the first half by goals from Davy Buggy and Jimmy Byrne, they had to withstand a lot of pressure in the second half before coming out on top. Their next hurdle is Blackwater of Wexford.

Kilkenny senior hurlers got the year off to the best possible start last Sunday when they had way too much fire power for a poor Dublin outfit in a bitterly cold Parnell Park. The combination of experienced backs and enthusiastic forwards gave new Dublin manager Anthony Daly a bad start to his stint in charge of the metropolitan side.

Cats reclaim Walsh Cup with a cracking season in store for all

Kilkenny reclaimed the Walsh Cup last Sunday after edging out Galway in extra time in a thrilling encounter in Pairc Lactain, Freshford. It may have only been the first Sunday in February but if this game is anything to go by we're in for some cracking action this year. On a bitterly cold afternoon around three thousands souls braved the elements and got full value for their €10 admission fee.

Michael is Kilkenny’s saving grace

Kilkenny, despite playing below par, picked up two valuable national hurling league points at Nowlan Park last Sunday. It took a last gasp point by Rower Inistioge's Michael Grace to snatch victory from a youthful and spirited Limerick side.
