Four years after a survey found the need for one, and after a number of false starts over the past 12 months, Castlebar finally saw the opening of an Educate Together school in the town. The school which opened its doors on Wednesday morning with 12 junior infants registered on the roll book is the second Educate Together school in the county.
Castlebar will have an Educate Together School open for the new school year, Jaralth Munnelly, the regional devlopment officer for Educate Together, said this week. Munnelly, who is also a Fine Gael member of Mayo County Council, told the Mayo Advertiser yesterday: "We will have the school open in Castlebar for the new school year, we are looking at a number of suitable venues for the school to open in and we have two that we are looking very hard and hope to have it sorted by the end of the week. We have been in touch with parents through the whole situation which has developed, and the school should be up and running when the school term comes back."
The new Educate Together School in Castlebar, which is due to open on Tuesday September 1, will hopefully still open despite not having a home sorted out just 12 days before it's due to open, according to the group's regional development officer. The new Educate Together school for the town was announced in February of this year and would be the county's second such school after the opening of one in Ballina last year. The school had been given the old Burren National School outside the town as a home, but the building was deemed not up to the required standard by the Educate Together.
